we noticed something strange crossing the road in the twilight of dawn, and it took a few seconds to realize that it was a coyote with a domestic cat in its mouth, wandering off to eat his prize catch, which I'm sure is tastier than the usual fare.

On the main street to the highway we witnessed Vegas Metro PD, guns drawn on 2 guys in a gas station parking lot. At 8AM. Doubtful any of those guys got up this morning to get into this, the cops or the accused, but this city never sleeps.

Then onto Rhyolite, the abandoned ruins of an old mining boom town of the early 1900s. We'd meant to go all the way to Stovepipe Wells to drop off a 12 pack of Shiner we brought for a friend, but were running short on time to get into Vegas before sunset. So we ended up stashing the beer in a secret location that we sent to them, and made dust as we hastened southward.

It was Friday and lots of people were on the road, getting out of town, heading to the same places we wanted to stop and see, and it was weird being around so many folks. For me this mostly meant that I’d have to work a little harder to get fotos without people in them.

The shoulder on this highway isn't much, not enough for a full car width before it drops sharply. This being the case, they were parked halfway out in the road but being visible from so far away, easy to avoid. Inside were four people who looked like they'd been stuck with a flat on the loneliest road in the US for hours.

Josh got out of the truck, with a wild look on his face and catching his breath, both of us knowing full well how serious of a situation that it had just been, and that it still was. Even though he'd survived that, our truck was still wedged sideways on a steep forestry road miles from more nothing in very cold mountain morning air.

And then out of almost nowhere on the horizon, appeared a dome. The road, as we could see, led directly to it though it was still a few miles out.

The road so far is long, and we have watched two sunsets; one on the eastern side of the range, and again once we descended the pass on the western front. It lasted a long time and it was beautiful in every direction, even at 80 mph.

The run of TX 287 from just north of Decatur to well past Amarillo is one of my least favorite parts of the great terrain of Texas; sometimes people call it the buttcrack of Texas, no offense to you if you are from there, but I kinda get it.
